Just a day after their joint press release announcing YouTube for Amazon devices and Amazon Prime Video for Chromecast, Amazon’s decided to match one of Google’s other recent announcements.
Straight after Google announced free YouTube Music streaming for Google Home and Assistant-powered devices, Amazon has decided to offer some more options of its own.
Amazon is now offering free Amazon Music playlists for Alexa device, announcing that users who don’t have an existing Prime membership or subscription to Amazon Music Unlimited can now enjoy select playlists and stations for free. Like many other free-tier music streaming services, there’ll be ads every so often, but this isn’t expected to be too intrusive.
Users can request stations based on music genres or specific artists, as well as some of the more popular playlists e.g. Amazon’s Pop Culture or Country Heat playlists.
Amazon Music’s free playlists and stations should be available in the US on Alexa-powered speakers from today forward. Whether Amazon will match Google’s move – and make the free tier available outside the us – remains to be seen.
