Like most big tech companies, Netflix is keen to sign on the next billion customers. Google’s Sundar Pichai has spoken about Google’s similar goal in the past – it’s all well and good to deliver products and services aimed at (and priced for) western markets, but what about developing markets such as India?
Well Netflix is on this, and has announced a mobile-only streaming service destined (and priced appropriately) for the developing Indian market.
At the time of writing, there are no plans to launch this mobile-only plan in Australia (or anywhere outside of India).
The plan described as, “an effective way to introduce a larger number of people in India to Netflix and to further expand our business in a market where Pay TV ARPU (average revenue per user) is low (below $5).”
While you can readily access Netflix on your mobile in Australia (or in any other market where it’s offered), it’s not priced as a phone only plan; it’s just a feature that’s available. In India, the opposite will be true – these phone-only plans will only be usable on mobile apps, and can’t be used on larger displays / TVs.
What’s not mentioned – but perhaps implied – is that these mobile-only plans will be limited in price but also quality; in some markets Netflix’s basic plan is restricted to 480p standard definition viewing, and so it’s likely that the mobile-only plans offered elsewhere will be too.
Would you consider a mobile-only Netflix plan? I suspect that if you only ever consume content on your mobile (or maybe a tablet) this would be a great option!
No because watching Netflix on a tiny little display is a horrible option.
Same, I use the mobile app simply for searching or adding things to my list when not at home
