With all the news about Samsung’s Note 10 and Apple’s iPhone 11, it’s now coming up to time for Huawei to announce its next handset, the Mate 30 series. This will happen in just over a week, and it looks as if one of the Mate 30’s features will be a slightly smaller notch than last year.
Yes, it might seem like a bit of a non-story, but it’s also a bit of a puzzler. See, the Mate 20 Pro had a fairly huge notch last year, with a camera, facial detection sensors and an earpiece in the middle making the Mate 20 Pro’s notch one of the largest I’ve seen.
The non-Pro Mate 20 notch was suitably smaller, but it looks as if the notch on the non-Pro Mate 30 will be a bit wider, and the question is why:
GizChina speculates that Huawei might be including a second selfie camera, and the PCB certainly supports this theory:
We can’t explain why Huawei has decided to make the notch bigger. There’s a reason for its size on the Pro version, after all, the device will come with advanced facial recognition features. The same technology probably won’t fit in the Mate 30 Pro notch, so could be Huawei equipping the handset with a secondary selfie camera? That the Chinese Behemoth has another secret on its sleeves.
I know I’d personally be hoping for a wide-angle selfie camera, but I guess we’ll have to wait a week or so to find out.
