Microsoft has purchased cloud to cloud data transfer specialist Mover to further accelerate the growth of its OneDrive and Office 365 online services.
As customer demand to move content to the cloud continues to grow, Microsoft hopes that Mover will help make it easier than ever for customers to migrate files to Microsoft 365.
Today, Mover supports cloud to cloud migration from over a dozen cloud service providers – including Box, Dropbox, Egnyte and Google Drive – into OneDrive and SharePoint, enabling seamless file collaboration across Microsoft 365 apps and services, including the Office apps and Microsoft Teams.
The Mover team also brings deep expertise and migration technology, which advances Microsoft’s capability to providing organisations of all sizes with the right tools, people and partners to successfully migrate to the Microsoft Cloud.
As an example of this the Mover team cite Autodesk, which they helped shift over 6,000 users, 200 terabytes of data, and 50 million files during 30 days to OneDrive.
On a much smaller scale I shifted all my cloud backup data from Dropbox to OneDrive a year ago and it was a time-consuming process even though I have the fastest possible 100/40 Mbps NBN plan from Aussie Broadband.
Sure I could have used a third-party application to make the move cloud to cloud by giving them my Dropbox and OneDrive login details but I considered that far too risky considering all my personal information stored in the cloud.
Having an official cloud to cloud transfer mechanism to shift files over to OneDrive would have been far more preferable.
Hopefully all the major cloud providers provide similar cloud to cloud data transfer services soon to help new customers shift over to their service.
This reduction in the friction of moving would make it a lot easier for people and businesses to change cloud providers if they are unhappy with their current one.
