Huawei’s laptop line has been rather desirable for a couple of years now, and the Matebook X Pro is the best example of this – a schmick, well designed laptop that captures that desirability often associated with Apple’s equipment – people see it, and want it.
The Matebook X Pro was first announced two years ago in 2018, and in its 2020 refresh, it gains an Ultra FullView touch-enabled display, better power consumption, improved performance and greater connectivity, making it an even more desirable proposition.
It comes in a range of colours too; Mystic Silver, Space Gray and a new Emerald Green colourway, which comes in an understated verdant green finish that elegantly envelops the chassis. The lid of the Emerald Green model is accented with a golden Huawei branding, giving it an instantly classic look.
All this in a nice, portable 14.6mm thick frame that weighs just 1.33kg.
The new Ultra FullView display has a 91% screen-to-body ratio, in a 3:2 aspect ratio which is perfect for side-by-side work (which I’m doing right now, reading a media release and writing this story!)
While it doesn’t support 4K video, it does support 3K (3,000 x 2,000 pixels) and the full 100% of the sRGB colour gamut, bringing content to life and delivering an immersive experience for users.
Besides these key changes, there’s a number of other smaller improvements under the hood, so to speak:
- 10th generation Intel Core i7 and i5 options
- NVIDIA GeForce MX250 with 2GB GDDR5 RAM
- Increased cooling capacity to keep things cool when under strain
- Quad speakers for immersive audio
- 56Wh battery for all-day battery life, without the need for a cable or a spare battery
- 65W Type-C charger to charge things up rapidly
- Fast WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity
One question we’ve had is what is running on this laptop. Given Huawei’s well publicised trade ban imposed by the US Government, there was some doubt whether Huawei would be able to supply Microsoft Windows on its laptops post-May 2019.
The good news is that it can. The company clarified today that:
Microsoft has been granted a U.S. license to export software to Huawei.
From the company business perspective, if Microsoft is allowed to continue to supply Windows services, we will continue to prioritise Windows and maintain our long-term partnership.
Precise details on timing, pricing and so on for the Australian market haven’t yet been shared. We understand the Matebook X Pro will be coming to Australia, though, and we will share pricing when we find out!
