The rewards point market is something we rarely cover here at Ausdroid, honestly it’s a Pandora’s box that is often best left closed. However the latest offer from Optus and Virgin seems right up our alley. For any customers who signup to a new Optus plan, or existing customers who sign a new contract with a handset you’ll be eligible for up to 30,000 Velocity points.
Now, we’re not going to tell you that on it’s own that the points make the swap worth it, but if you were about to re-contract or switch to Optus anyway, or you were on the fence about who to sign up with then this may be a deal worth considering. It’s important to note that these are points or miles not status credits.
If signing up for a SIM only plan first instance, you’ll need to stay connected for 3 months and you’ll get 6,000 points for a $39/ month plan all the way up to 30,000 points for a $79/month plan. Depending on your current contract and spend level this might be an easy to to grab a few points. For instance most Business Class upgrades for an east coat flight seem to come in around 10,000 points.
You can sign up for as many plans as you want to pay for and collect points for every plan, so if you’re considering moving a whole family, or you have multiple devices between phones, tablets, watches and mobile broadband, those points could rack up fairly quickly. I have to admit, I’m a little tempted to give Optus a try, at least for 3 months.
