Huawei is readying to launch the Huawei P40 series in just a couple of days, and despite the uncertainty flowing around the world at the moment, the company is pushing ahead. Official posters have surfaced online and are on display around Europe – though there’s precious little to be seen of it in Australia.
With a beautiful quad-curved display and a lot of technical improvements over last year’s P30 series, the P40 series promises a lot – but, for anyone who’s been following Huawei’s journey over the last year, there’s a lot of questions yet to be answered.
GizChina reports that besides some slim bezels, there’s a range of other new features coming. The P40 Pro will come with a Kirin 990 5G processor and a dual-punch display with a resolution of 3160 × 1440 and a pixel value of 518ppi. It will also use a new Leica ‘matrix’ camera module, with three rear cameras in the base model, and four and five cameras on the P40 Pro and P40 Pro Plus models.
The cameras are – in a P series named for photography – the centre-piece. In the P40 Pro Plus, the main sensor will be a 52-megapixel IMX700 1/1.28-inch RYYB sensor, paired with a 40MP IMX650 sensor, an 8MP telephoto lens and a 20MP periscope lens. There’s also a ToF sensor. This will deliver 10x lossless zoom, colour temperature sensor and LED flash.
All told, there will be five different models of smartphone released by Huawei – P40, P40 Pro, P40 Pro Plus, P40 Lite and P40 Lite E. Across this range of five handsets, it seems we’ll see six colour options too – silver, gray, orange (or gold), black, blue and aurora.
While we ponder how the Huawei P40 series will be to use, without its Google apps and with Huawei’s substitute offerings, we can look at these tasty camera samples and imagine how good it would be if Google were actually included.
