FWIW, the Huawei P40 Pro just topped DxOMark for both rear and selfie cameras

I’m over DxOMark scores. Although it is a good indication of a smartphone’s camera ability it is often a misrepresentation of a device’s true quality in real life. But when a device tops the DxOMark ladder beating out all others by quite a distance we sit up and take notice.

According to the DxOMark score for the Huawei P40 Pro that large camera bump produces some great imagery. That module is packed with some impressive specs. It features a big 50MP (f/1.9 with OIS) main camera featuring some of the largest pixels yet seen on a smartphone camera on a 1/1.28 inch sensor. It also brings back the RYYB sensor technology introduced on last year’s P30 Pro. It also places a 12MP (f/3.4 with OIS) RYYB sensor behind its periscope telephoto lens, claiming up to 50X zoom and offering AI & OIS to help you keep a stable shot at that extreme zoom limit. Finally, a 40MP (f/1.8) ultra wide angle sensor should provide greater detail to wide angle shots and a depth sensing camera.

DxoMark scored the rear camera at 128, a decent four points clear of the next mark — the recently announced OPPO Find X2 Pro and the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro. Interestingly the one year old P30 Pro only sits a single point behind them.

The P40 Pro excelled at areas the P30 Pro did — night photography, autofocus, a wide dynamic range and good levels of detail at medium and long distance. The stabilisation was also extremely impressive as well. The end summary of the rear camera was:

Of course everyone uses the selfie camera quite a bit these days and Huawei have not missed there as well. The dual camera selfie setup — 32MP 1/2.74-inch sensor alongside a depth sensor — produced the highest selfie score of 103. The next best non-Huawei phone is the Galaxy Note 10 5G at 99.

You can be sure that Huawei are continuing to work on their camera technology and it is unfortunate that they cannot be synced automatically with Google Photos. Maybe once we get a new US President later this year that might change.

We can only hope so as it seems their smartphone photography is way ahead of the pack. Until then they are a bit gimped but for those who are happy to sync photos elsewhere you can pre-order one now from JB Hi-Fi and Officeworks for $1,599.
