These server-side updates are a bit sneaky, as new features appear in Google’s apps without any real notification. Another one has done exactly that in the Google Maps location sharing interface.
Essentially it’s been brought up to the current material design standards in the Android developer guidelines.
The change itself is the Floating Action Button (FAB) which allows you to share your location with others for a variety of time frames and through differing pathways. The default sharing time is 1 hour, fantastic if you’re meeting up with friends or family at a remote location as you can see each other converging on your meeting place. You’ll also see — providing you’re currently sharing — a list of who you’re sharing your location with at the current time.
The changes seem to have been widely rolled out already, well worth trying out if you’ve got a need or reason to share your location with friends or family.
