vivo are a relatively new player in the Australian market but they have been around for a while now. They are the sister company of OPPO (same owner — BBK Electronics) and are starting to make a splash in the lower end of our smartphone market.
They have now announced two more competitors for the entry-mid level with the Y20s and the Y70, at $299 and $449 respectively.
vivo Y20s
The Y20s arrives as the lower priced of the two with a massive 5,000mAh battery with 18W flash charging support. onboard. Powered by the entry-level Snapdragon 460 it is supported with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage with microSD support up to 256GB.
The headline feature, aside from the massive battery, is the triple rear camera with AI support. The 13MP main lens, 2MP bokeh lens and 2MP Super Macro lens in the rear camera module promises support for a wide range of features and portrait light effects. The front facing camera is an 8MP lens.
The 6.51-inch 720P LCD display with tear drop notch won’t be the best display you’ve ever seen but is likely to be one of the best in this price range. The fingerprint sensor is located on the side power button. The software onboard is vivo’s Funtouch OS 11, confusingly based on Android 10. Incidentally the phone supports dual SIM AND a microSD at the same time.
The vivo Y20s is available in Obsidian Black and Nebula Blue instore and online at JB Hi-Fi, Big W, Officeworks, Mobileciti and Amazon for RRP$299.
vivo Y70
The vivo Y70 is the more powerful of the two sporting the mid-range Snapdragon 665, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The battery here is smaller but still a decent size at 4,100mAh with support for 33W fast charging.
The 6.44-inch 1080P AMOLED display with tear drop notch gives the device an impressive 90.12% screen to body ratio and hides the fingerprint sensor within the display — yes Google it is possible for a cheaper device to do so.
Once again the phone comes with a triple rear camera setup — this time a 48MP main lens alongside the 2MP macro and 2MP bokeh lenses. The front shooter also get an upgrade with a 16MP lens. Once again the phone also supports dual SIM AND a microSD at the same time and is running Funtouch 11.
The vivo Y70 is available in Gravity Black and Oxygen Blue for just RRP$449 from JB Hi-Fi, Big W, Officeworks, Mobileciti and Amazon.
There are now so many choices in the entry and mid level ranges for Australians. these two offerings from vivo expand that even more and if you are in the market for something at this price they are certainly worth a look as vivo make great quality, value for money hardware.
If they’re not Android One devices, where OS and security updates are guaranteed, then these mid tier Chinadroid devices are not even worth thinking about considering.
OS and security updates are guaranteed for 2 years
As evidenced by OPPO’s lack of updates. Ended up selling my OPPO R15 Pro and moving back to Samsung with their S20 Fan Edition.
