These days everyone is trying to get in on the smart home game, and unlike some aspects of our modern tech life, much of the smart home caper is found in walled gardens. Fortunately the tide is changing, and the latest smart home gear is coming from D-Link in the form of its latest mini WiFi Smart Plug.

The Australian-certified power plug WiFi device is much smaller than many smart plugs, but unfortunately at 58mm high and wide it’s still not looking like you can fit two abreast into a standard Australian Clipsal or HPM power point. Being a WiFi device it’s ‘hubless’ connecting to your home WiFi with setup and control via the mydlink App.

Of course what respectable smart device wouldn’t integrate with both Google Assistant and Alexa for voice control? D-Link has included those assistants, and even included IFTTT integration for the truly adventurous smart home automation geeks. Via the mydlink app you can set schedules and timers and there’s even the option to integrate the plugs with your d-Link smart cameras for some security integrations.

One of the things I’m loving about Google Assistant is the ability to bring together multiple different devices from various brands and create a seamless and cohesive ecosystem of smart home devices. These are all controllable via voice through the Google Assistant and touch via Smart display and the Home app on phones and tablets.

If you’re using a Google Assistant-compatible D-Link camera and wanted to include some automation based on those cameras but you already had other brands of smart outlets, that’s no issue. Google Assistant will unify them all giving you the flexibility to build your smart home ecosystem exactly as you want to.

The new D-Link Mini Smart Plug is available online now via D-Link for $39.95 and will be available through D-Link’s normal retail partners in the coming days.
