Samsung Gear Smartwatch
Samsung has gone quiet on smartwatch development of late. After a slew of devices hit the market, Samsung pulled back, rethought their strategy, and is apparently nearly ready to re-enter the market with a new product. But before they do, they want a great app eco-system first, and so they’re calling on developers to check out their new Gear SDK prior to launch.

The invite from Samsung includes an invitation to join Samsung and their partners to provide a better Samsung Gear experience for users. Samsung has listed a number of partners already on-board, which include CNN, Yelp, FidMe, Baidu and Apposter.

Of the introdcution early, JK Shin, CEO and Head of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics said

Samsung has actively adapted its approach to wearable device development as the leader of the rapidly developing category. Through meaningful and progressive innovation, Samsung welcomes to developers and industry leaders to join this open collaboration effort to enrich and create unique user experiences for a new smart mobile life.

Samsung is inviting developers interested in learning more to head over to developer.samsung.com/wearable/ to sign up and get more information – but it appears the invitation went out before the party went live as there’s a ‘We’re sorry, the requested URL is no longer available.’ error on the page – but we’re sure that will be fixed up post-haste.

The other tidbit, if the invite is to be believed is that the upcoming watch will feature a round display. This fits in with rumours that have been circulating about the new Samsung watch, including some trademark applications which show that the watch could be called the ‘Gear W’ and run ‘Wheel UX’.

It’s a matter of watch this space, but with the majority of popular Android Wear watches being round in design, it’s a no-brainer that a company like Samsung is listening to feedback.

The lack of Android Wear just makes this DOA for myself and probably most people who would even think about wearing a smart-watch.

Running ‘Wheel UX’…
Looks like another Tizen device is in the works.
