fcc lable gear s2

Following on from recent teases and announcements two variants of the Samsung Gear S2 smart watch has just passed through the FCC- the USA’s communication regulation and testing agency. Apart from a slight difference in size – 0.9mm across the width – there is no indication of what the differences between the standard and “classic” model will be. Being a smart watch it’s understandable that there isn’t much to be gleaned from the filing, from what is contained in the submission we have ascertained the following about the Gear S2:

  • Overall dimensions S2 42.25 mm x 40.8 mm, S2 Classic 43.6mm x 39.9mm
  • WiFi 802.11bgn on the 2.4 GHz spectrum
  • Bluetooth 4.1 LE
  • An included wireless charger – charging standard not listed
  • Model number S2 SM-R720, S2 Classic SM-R732

Noticeably absent from this list is cellular bands, the original Gear S included the ability to independently access the cellular network – via its own SIM – to provide ongoing connectivity even when away from WiFi or its paired phone. The documents released thus far show no indication that either models of the Gear S2 will include cellular connectivity, in the description of the units they are described as a Bluetooth and DTS b/g/n watches, so at this stage it appears that Samsung may have dropped the cellular connectivity from the Gear S2 line up.

Gear S2 Leak Pic 2

The Gear S2 line is expected to be Tizen devices, and if they have the same compatibility as last year, they will only be compatible with selected Samsung devices. The Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic are set to be unveiled at IFA Berlin next week so we will know all of the specifics soon enough.
