Like most companies, Acer has also gotten a jump on the CES announcements coming this week announcing a new Android tablet as well as a couple of Chrome OS devices. Their Android tablet is a budget friendly Iconia tablet aimed at kids. which comes with a simplified user interface, pre-screened content appropriate for children, and parental controls.
At launch the Iconia One 8 will come in at US$99.99 making it a good option for parents looking for a brand-name tablet without a hefty pricetag.
The Iconia One 8 will have a decent spec for the price tag though with a 10-point multi-touch 8″ HD IPS display, with a Quad-core Mediatek processor under the hood and 1GB of RAM and 16GB of on-board storage and microSD card slot as well. Front and rear cameras will be included on the tablet with 5MP camera on the rear and 2MP camera on the front. The tablet will come with a battery capable of outputting 9 hours of life. The Iconia One 8 will be available in white or Blue backs.
The kid-centric focus of the tablet will be overlaid over the Android 5.1 operating system, offering a ‘Kids Center’, a simplified child-friendly interface. Pre-screened content including videos, games, books and websites will be included and parents will be able to block access to content they deem not suitable, and pre-select suitable content for their children. Parents will even be able to set a daily time limit for their children if required.
As well as kid-centric tools, the Iconia One 8 has a number of attractive features such as one-touch and double-tap to wake with EZ WakeUp. There’s also EZ Snap to share screenshots with ease and a System Doctor to manage storage, apps and memory.
The Iconia One 8 (B1-850) will be priced at €129 when it launches in European markets this month and US$99.99 when it launches in the US in February, but Acer has yet to announce any release dates or pricing for the Australian market.
