Google’s Cultural Institute has been busy partnering up with museums, archives and any number of organisations with an art and culture focus since their launch in 2011. The foundation aims to “make important cultural material available and accessible to everyone and to digitally preserve it to educate and inspire future generations” – a very worthy aim. Now Google has brought an app to Android to help you reap the fruits of their labours.

The description of this as an ‘App’ is a fair stretch though, it’s a mere web wrapper for accessing the thousands of exhibits and art pieces on display via the Google Cultural Institute. Still, it’s a pretty good way to experience some of the exhibits from the some 850 museums and more that Google has gotten on board with the project including art from greats such as Vincent Van Gogh. Features from the app include:

  • Zoom in to view artworks in extraordinary detail
  • Take 360 degree panoramic tours of hundreds of museums, heritage sites, and landmarks
  • Learn about iconic artworks, plus discover hidden gems and the stories behind them in our daily features
  • Explore artworks and more by color and by time period

If you’re a bit of an art buff, you can check out what’s on offer in the app by installing the app from Google Play, like all of Google’s apps it’s free so check it out.
