Samsung and HTC both announced their 2015 flagships at Mobile World Congress, with HTC announcing their One M9, while Samsung has released their Galaxy S6 as well as their dual curved edge display, the Galaxy S6 Edge.
Release dates aren’t known, official pricing isn’t known but we know what they look like, we know the specs.
HTC One M9
Samsung Galaxy S6
Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge
Screen
5-inch SLCD3 1920x1080p 440ppi
5.1’’ Quad HD(2560×1440) 577ppi, Super AMOLED
5.1’’ Quad HD(2560×1440) 577ppi, Super AMOLED, Dual edge
None of the above. I feel the handsets are becoming too expensive. All I use my phone for is calls, calendar, texts, emails and some browsing. So for me, the phone doesn’t need to have the latest hardware. It just needs to be functional with what I consider my must have features such as 4G, SD Card, NFC and a decent camera. Timely software updates is not necessary. Can someone recommend a mid-range headset that suits what I need?

Obviously just Samsung haters selecting HTC M9. Like seriously what is the point in the M9? Its so 2014. Also maybe the overheating of the 810 rumours were true, probably burn yourself on the M9.
Don’t be childish. I’ve had the M7, using M8 and can’t wait to be the first to get the M9. Specs don’t tell the whole story. Wife’s Note2 and Note4 is just inferior to my M7, M8.
If your coming from an iPhone user, the HTC One is the only android that actually works.
Lol. You tell them to not be childish when you troll with with non factual bias lies in response to them telling the truth.
The Note 4 until the S6 was objectively the World’s best overall phone. Whether you prefer it or the M8 does not change that. Even the Note 2 is way more flexible and productive than the M8.
Telling them to not worry about what others are doing is one thing…..But then childishly making a claim that shows your butthurt htc loyalty in response to them pointing out the truth is another.
If anyone is butt hurt it’s the guy making the claim that it’s just Samsung haters voting on the polls and you because you automatically think it’s the “truth” Clearly your Samsung Loyalty is the only thing apparent in this entire conversation. Now stop wasting my time with stupid accusations.
Translation…Your butthurt denial. Ifyou are unaware of the Samsung haters you are in bias denial or new to the internet.
Troll again? Of course you will.

All these phones cost as much as iphones used to cost in the beginning : double than anything else out there. It sounds a bit too much. Like a race for the golden phone. They should all have very fast phones, 5.5″, with quick cameras at half the price, like the n5 used to be. Samsung now has all these phones above the 1k mark and that is a joke. Look at the TVs you can get at that price. Sorry, but we are been taken for he iPhone ride here.

The S6 and S6 Edge have QHD screens. Are they likely to have text sharpening issues like the LG G3, or is that issue likely to be specific to the G3?
I remember when I owned a G3 for a week, the issue drove me crazy. I couldn’t even read Whirlpool clearly.
Displaymate just did a test of the S6/S6 Edge and found that it has the best display on the market in everywhere it counts. It even beats the Note 4 (the previous holder). The color accuracy, brightness and detail are market leading according to them.
Amoled displays are just inferior to IPS LCD. Wife’s Note4 screen is so overrated in real life compared to my M8. The only reason Samsung uses Amoled is to offset battery drain of a bigger screen. There’s also the reason why Apple has always used IPS screens. They don’t even have a FHD display yet but still incredible to look at.
Wow you like to get around like a troll on a broken record. You do realize that there are different screen modes on the Amoled devices now right? So you can choose if you want to keep it saturated or make it accurate. And that your M8 is saturated too. The note 4 and S6 are tied not just for world’s best mobile display overall, but that includes color accuracy. Boasting in their Basic mode more accurate colors than just about any other phone. Even higher quality than most TVs and monitors in the average home. The iPhone’s color gama… Read more »
Those modes don’t help it from what it is. Once you’ve used IPS monitors, especially desktop monitors, all led monitors suck. I personally use $1000 LCD IPS screens by LG which makes screens for Dell and Apple monitors. If u think Amoled is superior in quality and color reproduction, that’s just your preference. Because that’s false. Yes I still stand by the M8 has a better screen than the Note4 no matter what screen mode. Which is shocking considering the note 4 is 1440p. I have my wife’s note 4 right next to mine and for what it is, it’s… Read more »
Your premium monitors have nothing to do with the conversation. And unless they have a gamma error less than 1.0 are not very far ahead in color reproduction. So they might have a small lead in color reproduction…small…And that’s it. As for the rest they might match the white balance and fall behind in every other aspect. Fake blacks, washy contrast, more reflective, less angles, more consumed space, more energy hungry, and still probably have bright spots. And you have never seen a Note 4 or M8. The Note 4 in basic mode is vastly more accurate. The display is… Read more »
I have never seen a M8 or note4? Well I guess I can say u don’t know what Ur talking about too?
It doesn’t matter how technical u get by backing the Amoled displays because it is visually inferior no matter the mode the note4 is on. It doesn’t come anywhere near what is produced on the M8 or iPhone.
LMFAO!! You make up lies based off your own bias fanboysim and call me a kid out of butthurt for calling your bluff.
How adorable.
By all means….Prove your false claims please. Come on. Prove you are not being a bias troll? Oh wait…You can’t. You will troll again just like I say. Acting in denial and passing the blame on me while side tracking from proof.
My claims ain’t false. 1440p Amoled on 5.7″ with 550ppi+ isn’t any greater than 1080p IPS 440ppi on a 5″ screen. Reason being that human eyes cannot tell the difference.
What this becomes now is a technical gimmick for nerds like u to troll on about specs which makes no sense in real life.
This is why it comes down to color reproduction.
Amoled fail hard.
End of story. No more replies from here. Useless talking to a brickhead
So in otherwords you are an obedient little troll and did exactly like I said. I challenged you to prove you dramatic fanboy claims, but told you that you would not be able to and would randomly side track in denial with more lies. And you listened like a good fool.
You can’t prove anything. You just repeated the statements. Amoled fails. Not a shred of evidence or factual claims.
LOL – Pumpkin tool seems particularly butthurt with these poll results, haha – pepper your angus! Face it, the S6 is still an ugly, gimmick packed wannabe – sporting that laggy and butt ugly touch wiz, now with more glass. The M9 is still the king. Deal with it troll boy.
But by all means do tell. I’d love to know how you trolling in butthurt to make up excuses to go along with a bunch of fanboy and hater votes upset me so bad when in reality the S6 trashes the M9 in technology on paper and in real world use. And will sell dramatically more.
I’m just calling people out for their lies and fanboy bias.
Of course when you reply it will be in complete denial with random bias claims and trying to twist this around.
Troll again? Of course you will.
Yep – that QHD screen will really make the laggy crappiness of touch wiz really pop out at you haha. But don’t worry you can always remind yourself that its better by looking at the S6 spec sheet again – enjoy your mass marketed junk 😉

hahah you must be joking, LCD displays are vastly inferior to AMOLED. Samsung has been able to produce the best overall smartphone display on its last 3 devices. AMOLED is the future and M8 screen doesn’t come close to S5 let alone Note 4 and the S6
AMOLED displays are not superior especially in colour reproduction. They are only Gd for power consumption. The colour alone makes the display look cheap and unnatural no matter the modes. I have been an HTC user for the last two phones, (M7 and M8) and before that I had a Nexus S (Samsung), so I know a bit about both camps (though not about Samsung’s TouchWiz). The superior audio in the HTC has never been something that interested me and it annoyed me that the M7 was using this as a selling point when there were many other features on the phone that made it the best Android option. The plastic back of the S4 was a turn off at the time. Yes, Sense is excellent, but I am disappointed… Read more »
Waiting for the Galaxy Note 5. However the decision to can Qualcomm and go Exynos all the way irks me. So I might end up with a LG G 4 or the rumored G Note if it turns out to be a real Galaxy Note competitor.
The Exynos chip is far superior and it’s a good thing they went for it. And all part models that went full Exynos has plenty of cm support.
Plus it brought WolfsonAudio DAC
Wolfson is the brand. DAC is the audio chip.
Wolfson is known for making the better audiO chips in mobiles among others.
While Samsung of course does not take full advantage of it sadly it means higher quality output.
S6 has very clean output. With good volume. Held back by Samsung some in volume though. But cleaner. And for hackers it’s all game on with audio mods with wolfson
Yup. I just wish Samsung would use the better potential of the DAC. As good as it is it can be much better. Which is where the mods and hacks play in .
The Note 4’s 5.7 inch QHD Amoled consumed up to 40% less power than most 5 inch 1080p LCDs.
The S6’s display is 20% more efficient than the S5’s.
And it’s resolution is a requirement for VR.
Plus ties in with the Note4 for World’s best mobile display.
And the Exynos chip uses less energy and throttles less.
So how is it useless?
And the cameras lean toward s6 due to better image processing and much better low lens.
Amoled is just a pain to look at. Color reproduction is just too inferior to IPS screens. Reason why Apple and HTC sticks to IPS, just a joy to look at and premium feel since its the thing we use a lot daily.
For starters…..Aside from being completely inaccurate that is also entirely unrelated and side tracks from all the points I just made to the claims about battery life and display efficiency. Next onto how false and ridiculous that claim is: The note 4 and S6 are tied not just for world’s best mobile display overall, but that includes color accuracy. Boasting in their Basic mode more accurate colors than just about any other phone. Even higher quality than most TVs and monitors in the average home. The iPhone’s color gama error is not far off, but that is only one aspect… Read more »

While I’m not 100% decided, I am leaning towards the HTC One M9. Reasons: – I love the look, feel and design of the M8, the M9 sounds better – Much prefer Sense over Touchwiz in terms of looks and performance – Metal body > Glass to me (higher chance of glass cracking on back) – SD card slot (was bummed that Samsung dropped that) – 1080p screen with 2840mah battery should mean very good battery life (gsmarena has Galaxy S6 battery life being worse than the Galaxy S5 battery life…) – Dual stereo boomsound speakers haven’t been beaten The… Read more »
There’s been a lot of critisism about the M9’s camera. Do we know for sure that the S6’s camera is great?
I agree that the Z4 and G4 should be good. It will be interesting to see if Sony switches to a QHD screen and if it increases the size; obviously LG will stick with QHD and it will also have a new UI.
Yeah, there is a test on youtube, which includes the autofocus feature, lightsensor, etc. And the M9’s camera clearly sucks against the Galaxy S6.
I also don’t know which one I’m gonna buy. I looked up for the M9 but it seems like the camera is pretty bad at the moment. I hope they will improve the software until the release.
Sounds like someone is a Samsung supporter bumpkin. AMOLED uses much more power than other screens.. don’t believe everything you read on the internet..
Awe how cute. A bumpkin thinks it can talk technology with me or that it knows what the internet is. How silly.

Waiting for the Nexus… hang on, what do we call the next Nexus phone anyway? It’s not the Nexus 7. Nexus 6.1? Maybe an LG G4 or Xperia Z4 if those exist and are any good.
The next Nexus is being referred to unofficially as the Nexus 5 (2015) online, and it’s rumoured to be made by Huawei. Hopefully that means it’s cheaper than the N6.

As of this moment I’m leaning toward the S6, and it pains me to say that. I loathe TouchWiz and Samsung’s capacitive buttons, and I’m not a fan of glass backs but the M9 to me, is just disappointing.
How so? According to the table, the M9 is almost equal to the S6 in specifications. Just one or two minor differences. Yet you make the bold claim that the M9 is disappointing? Please enlighten us. How so?
Calm down. It’s not a ‘bold claim.’ In case it flew over your head, it’s an opinion. I even spelled it out with ‘TO ME, is just disappointing.’ I don’t need to justify an opinion to you, but since you’re asking… 1) The M9 is virtually the same body as the M8, and inherited that thick bezel around the screen. Yes, I know it houses components but if LG and Sharp could craft barely-there bezels into last year’s phones, HTC can do the same (yes I know there’s Boomsound drivers), especially since they made the jump to on-screen navigation buttons… Read more »
Thank you for your explanation. And sincere apologies for the crassness of my comment. It was not meant to offend in any way. I will proof read my comments before posting next time. Bold claim was not a phrase I should have used. As for your explanation, I too am a fan of HTC. But like you, I think too think they have dropped the ball as far as design is concerned. I have no issues with the specifications except for the camera. They never should have gone down this UltraPixel path. I am also not happy with the way… Read more »
There is nothing wrong with the ultra pixel path. It was a great idea. Like they said though the issues is that it’s the same one a couple years later. In fact it was downgraded to lose OIS.
Had they used an 8 or 12up sensor with 2um pixels it could have been near and they sure make a thick enough device
What’s the appeal of the Edge? It’s a novel concept, but I’m not sure I understand what’s so appealing about it. It’s certainly sparked a lot of interest.

Frankly the only reason I can see to move off the Nexus 5 is the new 4G bands that optus and telstra insist on creating – and that’s not enough of an issue as yet. I don’t need a higher resolution, faster processor, etc. and they are still being unrealistic in the prices.
Wake me up when they work out how they are going to innovate their way out of this blind alley.
While yes hacks and mods like that which help are great….But do not reflect the stock comparisons to others and are not something everyone would choose.
Plus in that respect the same can be done to others that are already better and then become even more superior.

there are many specs missing for samsung phone which are pointed for M9
like 4k video, NFC. Also samsung’s free streaming music service (with NO ads) is really cool. For me edge is a GO. being a nexus user i really dont mind missing of SD and removal battery, and i’m looking to get the avengers Ironman edition 🙂
Both are out of your price range Jeni, that info will be available when you are ready to purchase in 2018

TouchWiz alone stops me from ever buying a Samsung. On the other hand, HTC has about the best UI available, as well as better speakers, LCD display (which I prefer to AMOLED) and a bigger battery. An added bonus is that the M7/M8/M9 have an elegance that no other handsets have. I’m still a sucker for a Sony though.
i think yes, no point of having edge with out having optimised software. have a look at nexus 6 and note 4, note 4 works great as it uses the real estate better due to touchwiz features like multi window and s-pen.
Less bloat, faster, more intuitive and beautiful to look at. TouchWiz has always had horrible colours, and with the S6 they’ve just substituted black and yellow with orange and red. It would be good for a kid’s phone!
good thing all that can be changed through themes on the s6. Hopefully the theme manager will be coming to other Samsung devices. I myself really don’t mind the TW colors that are on the s3 and s4. Its android green and Samsung blue. Whats wrong with that.
Tuchwiz is objectively ahead. Whether it’s what you prefer or not.
And it’s only gotten much better. The same way sense had to get better.
Plus now ontop of the improvements to Touchwiz Samsung ifs using a much stronger and more power efficient chip that will throttle a lot less. And dramatically faster storage.
And their new theme engine runs pretty deep. You can change all the icons and colors.
That obviously won’t change which you prefer to look at.
And HTCS battery is only about 300mah more. With a more power hungry display, SoC, memory, and radio set .

I haven’t decided yet. Leaning towards the m9 though. It all depends on price, how the 810 actually performs and how the camera turns out with its final software
I honestly think both will price themselves out of contention.

Call me ignorant, but what exactly is a Wolfson DAC? And what are the benefits?
Wolfson is the brand. DAC is the audio chip.
Wolfson is known for making the better audiO chips in mobiles among others.
While Samsung of course does not take full advantage of it sadly it means higher quality output.
S6 has very clean output. With good volume. Held back by Samsung some in volume though. But cleaner. And for hackers it’s all game on with audio mods with wolfson
Cool. thanks for the explanation, I might actually consider Exynos now.
Yup. I just wish Samsung would use the better potential of the DAC. As good as it is it can be much better. Which is where the mods and hacks play in .
Good. If they went for the 810, it’d probably be a bigger flop than even the M9.
Hard to say without knowing the final price.
The S6 Edge has the cooler screen but the M9’s screen resolution is more practical and probably has the better camera.
Close call.
The iPhone’s color gama error is not far off, but that is only one aspect… Read more »
My Nexus 5 died last week… I like both but need to know what the Z4 has in store and how the OnePlus Two plans to compete before I can lay down cash to upgrade my Moto E travel phone! Haha
Just going off the sample photos I’ve seen from the M9 and S6, I thought the S6 looked quite a bit better.
HTC said the camera software wasn’t final, and I really hope it wasn’t.
That was a bad pre production battery review
While the M9 may be a good device the S6 is clearly ahead
As a HTC M8 owner, I’m definitely looking at the Samsung Edge, haven’t been this interested in a Samsung since the S2.
It looks great, and the I’m really curious about the new internals. I guess that’s the benefit that Samsung has over the competition.
How about a decent battery? The Nexus 5 has an appalling battery.
4.4.4 with elementalx kernel and smart radio from GravityBox = epic battery
While yes hacks and mods like that which help are great….But do not reflect the stock comparisons to others and are not something everyone would choose.
Plus in that respect the same can be done to others that are already better and then become even more superior.
there are many specs missing for samsung phone which are pointed for M9
like 4k video, NFC. Also samsung’s free streaming music service (with NO ads) is really cool. For me edge is a GO. being a nexus user i really dont mind missing of SD and removal battery, and i’m looking to get the avengers Ironman edition 🙂
The critical specs missing from the Samsung info, present for the HTC, is the Radios section
Without that info, it’s very hard to choose.
Is the “Edge Interface” really that different from TouchWiz?
i think yes, no point of having edge with out having optimised software. have a look at nexus 6 and note 4, note 4 works great as it uses the real estate better due to touchwiz features like multi window and s-pen.
why do you prefer htc’s ui over TW?
Less bloat, faster, more intuitive and beautiful to look at. TouchWiz has always had horrible colours, and with the S6 they’ve just substituted black and yellow with orange and red. It would be good for a kid’s phone!
You’ve never even used an S6, don’t make any judgement yet.
I’ve seen videos of TouchWiz on the S6.
Still not a fair judgement to make until you use it in real life.
good thing all that can be changed through themes on the s6.
The Edge looks great in my opinion. I’ve got the Note 3 which I’ve found to be a great device. I’m going to see what the Note 5 looks like before I make my decision. But the Edge sure looks great.
Z4 Compact anyone?
Yep!
