There can be no doubt that Google isn’t holding anything back with the marketing campaign leading up to the public release of the Pixel and Pixel XL Wednesday next week, October 20. We’ve already had a look at some of their previous marketing, and today they have released a new spot that walks a little on the wild side.

Check out the video below:

The ad campaign is centred around a ‘Google search box’ that slowly transforms into the outline of a Pixel device. The message, however subtle, seems to be that you’ll get the power of Google on your phone. Time will tell how successful this subtle marketing campaign is, especially considering the somewhat exorbitant prices of the Pixel and Pixel XL in Australia.

This ad has been all over TV (both free-to-air and Foxtel) in the last week or so, which is indicative of the size of the marketing push.

Are you getting a Pixel? Let us know below.

I’m surprised the PC crowd isn’t up in arms yelling “THAT SONG FEATURED TRANS-SEXUALS AND RACISM!!!!”

My Pixel is still listed as “pending” on the Google Play store. If it still hasn’t shipped by the 20th and I can just walk into JB HiFi and buy one unlocked over the counter, I’m going to do just that and cancel my Google store order.

Really not fair that people who put in a preorder should get their devices after everyone else.

Same here. However, I’m not in a hurry as much as you cause I’m still waiting for the screen protectors.

Have you found any good ones to order?

Nizar Noor

Not really. I found a couple of options but they’re all shipping from the UK. So I ordered anyway.

I ended up going with some tempered glass screen protectors. Not sure how they’ll go but they can’t be worse than going naked.

Nizar Noor

Where did you get them from?

eBay.

Look for “GENINE TAGG TEMPERED GLASS SCREEN PROTECTOR FOR Google Pixel / Pixel XL”

I got two for my Pixel for $10.99. ETA is 19-21 October (fingers crossed).

Don’t forget the 3% overseas transaction charge that you are probably paying. Better off picking up locally rather than let Google make you pay for their tax avoidance.
Also these phones are over $1k the tax free threshold for international shipments is exceeded so this time things change for Google and their shipping method.

Hmmm according to my Google Store email the price is $1079 (with free shipping) which is identical to JB HiFi.

Got any reference that this happens with Google Play store orders?

By that logic, anyone who ordered an apple product which is also over the 1k mark would pay the tax, yet, I haven’t read any reports of that either.
AFAICT, it looks like the product is sold by Google Australia, so the onus is on the seller, since they’re an australian business to pay the import taxes.
