So it seems there was a very well hidden little gem at CES, with what appears to be the upcoming Nokia 8 flagship smartphone from the Nokia brand owner, HMD Global, which the company is rumoured to be launching on February 26th.

It would seem that the Nokia 8 was present at CES, albeit in disguise. It would seem that the phone was showcased at the Qualcomm Booth at CES, where company representatives requested people not to take any photo’s of the device, but we all know that rules are meant to be broken and thanks to one person, we now have the best and most clearest picture to date of the device.

So as you can see, there was two Nokia 8’s set up on a small, trembling rig, identical in everything however it would seem their CPU’s helping power both devices, were slightly different. One of the Nokia 8’s had an ‘old’ 821 CPU chipset whilst the other was using Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 835 SoC chipset. The trembling rig showed off the benefits of EIS 3.0 in video stabilisation which is included in the newer Snapdragon 835.

Both devices seemed to lack any sort of branding, however the stills at the end of the clip below shows a familiar camera bump that is recognisable to those who have seen and used PureView cameras before (similar to the Lumia 1020). In addition to this, the overall design does seem similar to the recently shown off Nokia 6. The Nokia 6 was shown with capacative keys, the Nokia 8’s are replaced here by software keys.

Rumoured specs for the Nokia 8 include 6GB of RAM powering the phone, with both 64/128GB storage options available and of course a microSD card slot to bump that up. A huge 24MP sensor with both OIS and EIS will be embedded on the rear of the phone in that familiar camera bump, which will apparently include optics supplied by industry leading optics company Carl Zeiss. A companion 12MP selfie snapper will apparently be on the front.

There’s no visible fingerprint scanner on the Nokia 8, a strange omission for what’s reported to be a ‘flagship’ level smartphone. The inclusion of a fingerprint scanner has become almost standard across most high end devices as well as even lower end offerings, but as you can see in the video it appears that the Nokia 8 doesn’t come with one – although this could merely be an engineering sample provided simply for demonstration at CES.

The rumoured announcement date for the Nokia 8 is February 26th, and if all goes to plan we’ll be sending the Ausdroid team along to the booth at Mobile World Congress to check it out.

Fingerprint scanner could be under the glass, that’s where it is on the nokia 6 in the promo video.

“most clearest”
“there was two Nokia 8’s”
“6GB of RAM powering the phone”

I don’t like to be too picky but sometimes the writing really gets in the way of the information!
