We’ve seen a number of Lifeproof Fre cases in the past, and fundamentally, found them to be fantastic. I knew, with the advent of the Pixel 2, that Lifeproof must be doing something for these great new phones, and lo-and-behold: they are.

I’ve used Lifeproof Fre cases for a few years now, as they provide a waterproof case for many popular handsets. I say proof, because unlike various IP ratings for devices with all sorts of caveats, these cases — if properly applied — make your phone impregnable to water, meaning you can take them in the shower, in the pool, or even take them snorkelling for a bit of underwater photography (though I’m sure Lifeproof might not recommend the latter).

Speaking of that recommendation, here’s what Lifeproof say you can  do with their Fre cases, including for the Pixel 2 range:

  • Waterproof, submersible to 2 metres for up to an hour
  • Dirtproof, sealed from dirt and dust
  • Snowproof, snow and ice can’t touch it
  • Drop-proof, surviving drops from up to 2 metres onto hard surfaces

Having used them for LG’s G5, Samsung’s Galaxy S8, and even on an iPhone 5, these cases are tough, good looking, and most importantly, they don’t add a huge additional bulk to your phone. I’ve had them in the pool in Bali, in the Mediterranean off Barcelona, and dropped plenty of them on Sydney’s streets. They offer the protection they claim.

Lifeproof’s Fre is a certified Made for Google accessory, and will be available later this month for $99.95 for the Pixel 2, and $129.95 for the Pixel 2 XL. Two colour options will be available, Night Light (shown above) and Fire Run (a bright orange case).
