This might seem like a silly question, but it isn’t, and it’s one that I think quite a few people may well wonder. Can you have more than one Google Home in the one house?

The answer is yes. You can actually have quite a lot more than one. At the moment, I’ve got three set up, and I’m sure that there are other Ausdroid staff who’ve got two or more set up as well.

You might think that more than one Google Home would get confusing, with questions like “what if they both hear me say ‘OK Google’ – will they both try to listen and respond?” The short answer is no. Having multiple Google Home’s in your home is rather cool actually, and here’s how they work:

  • Generally, the speaker you’re closest to will respond to your command. Because they’re all linked to your Google Account, they can communicate amongst themselves to ensure that conflicts don’t happen. However, you probably don’t want to put them too close to each other. Different rooms is a good idea.
  • You can link them up for multi-room audio playback.
  • You can command one, and have it play back audio elsewhere — e.g. ask the bedroom speaker to play music in the lounge, or vice versa.
  • You can control your Chromecasts with them (though technically speaking, you don’t need more than one Home to do this)
  • Pop one in the kitchen so you can add stuff to your shopping list, and have one in the bedroom so you can ask it what to wear to work (or more specifically, what the weather is, so you can decide).

While the original Google Home was (and still is) a touch too expensive for many want to splash out for multiples, with the advent of the new Google Home Mini at just $79, you can easily put two in your place for the cost of an original Google Home.

So yes, you can have multiple Google Homes in your home, and the way they work together is pretty cool, too.

I have a Home in the loung and will be getting a Mini with my Pixel 2 XL. I just have to work out where to put the Mini!

I have 3x full Google Homes and a Mini (with 2x more on the way). Works very well, and the multi-room audio is very much worth the effort.

I’ve got 3 minis and 1 Home ( yes I’m a bit addicted!) set up in the study, bedroom, living room and kitchen respectively. Being able to play music anywhere is the main reason for having so many Minis plus all the otherGoogle assistant goodness of course.
