Children of the 80s and 90s will probably remember the time their mum or dad came home with a Motorola StarTAC mobile. Among the most popular foldable phones, the format has largely died out until recently, when rumours began to emerge of a new Motorola folding phone.

In 2019, we’ve got foldable smartphone displays, and this means the foldable could make a real comeback. We’ve seen leaked photos of the Moto RAZR 2019 (which is what we’ll call it for now) before, but now we’ve got a nice rendered video to watch, and I have to tell you, I’m excited.

Unlike other foldable smartphones, this isn’t smartphone sized that unfolds to a tablet size; rather, the Moto RAZR appears to be a foldable that expands to a smartphone size, but starts as something much smaller and slimmer.

Other rumoured inclusions are a small front screen to show notifications and perhaps as a selfie viewfinder, but most certainly to see the time.

Inside, we’re expecting the Moto RAZR to feature a 6.2-inch foldable OLED display with 2,142 x 876 resolution. Rumoured specifications indicate the RAZR is unlikely to be a top-tier smartphone, with mid-tier inclusions such as a Snapdragon 710, 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. There’s also talk of a 6GB / 128GB variant.

The battery is rumoured to be quite small, at 2,730mAh, but with 27W turbo charging, it’s likely that topping the RAZR off won’t take long anyway. Whether it’ll last all day – and being constantly folded and unfolded – remains to be seen.

There’s no hint of pricing or availability, we just hope it doesn’t end up costing an arm and a leg like other foldables are rumoured to.

I never liked the RAZR phones, as the chin on them always got in my way for one-handed accessing the bottom row of keys, in the phone shop demo units I tried.

Screen bezels won’t be much of an issue. It was simply how far out from the keypad, the chin protruded on the RAZR phones. Too far for me to be able to manage one handed operation on the demo units in phone shops.
