In the middle of last year, we got our first glimpse of what Asus believed mobile gaming should be. The ROG phone was met with reviews showing that it’s essentially more gamer than phone. We had a similar thought on the Razer Phone 2 when it landed on our test bench, noting that it feels like a solution for a non-existent problem.

Clearly Asus believe there is a market worth pursuing here. Enter the ROG Phone 2, due for release on July 23rd. Droidshout has some information on potential final specs, interestingly there are two charging options 18W or 30W which depends on the variant you get your hands on.

The ASUS ROG Phone 2 is rumoured to come with an improved screen in the form of a Super AMOLED panel with 120Hz refresh rate. It was also revealed yesterday that the ROG Phone 2 will have a horizontally placed dual-camera setup on the rear. The phone will most probably be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC, at least 6GB of RAM, and at least 128GB of internal storage space.

Personally I hope the final product backs off a touch on the gaming and delivers more as a phone.

If it’s not a viable option for daily use, people will stick with or go to dedicated options like the Nintendo Switch with wider gaming variety and save some money on their phone.
