After beginning to roll out the Android Pie update to the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact ahead of schedule last week, Sony has confirmed they’re ahead of schedule XZ-series handsets, while confirming a date for the XA-series handsets.
Sony’s original announcement for the rollout of Pie saw Xperia XZ series handsets expected to begin receiving Android Pie from November, while their XA series handsets were targeted to start receiving the update from ‘early 2019’.
Sony has announced they’ve moved up the schedule with the XZ Premium, XZ1 and XZ1 Compact starting from October 26th, while the XZ2 Premium (which never went on-sale here in Australia) will begin receiving it from November 7th. Their newly announced Xperia XZ3 (which shows no signs of launching here in Australia) already comes pre-loaded with Android 9.
For mid-tier devices, the Xperia XA-series devices named include the Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra and XA2 Plus which will all begin receiving the update from 4 March.
These updates of course come with the rider that if you purchased your device through a local telco that you will of course have to wait for their software testing approval process.
It’s a decent turn around for both their flagship and mid-range devices, but there’s a lot more Xperia owners out there who’d love some Android 9 on their phone, so hopefully Sony could expand the list in the future.
