With Despicable Me 2 due to hit theatres next Thursday, Gameloft has released their Movie Tie-In game Despicable Me: Minion Rush for Android and iOS.
Playing as one of Gru’s lovable yellow minions, you’ll run your way through various courses in the game. The game is essentially Temple Run but cuter. You’ll spend much of your time just running along various tracks while collecting bananas, knocking your fellow minions off the track – this increases your despicable meter and gets you a higher score or dodging obstacles, but you also get small side games in which villains appear to try and knock you off as well using various methods.
Despicable Me: Minion Rush is a freemium title and that means in-game currency and this game has two. Bananas make up one of the two in-game currencies, you collect bananas along the courses in the game which you can use to purchase different costumes for your character which unlock certain skills or purchase upgrades to use in the game. The other currency is the Token and these are where the real money comes in, you use tokens to revive your character when you inevitably ‘die’ as well as purchasing extra bananas.
The game has been developed by Gameloft for Universal Pictures, they collaborated heavily with the team at Illumination Entertainment to try and capture the ‘distinct humour and heart of the film brand within the game’. And they invariably do. The game is cute, very cute and the cutscenes with the minions just scream out that these guys not only deserve their own game but a whole movie to themselves.
Devices running Android 2.3 and upwards are able to download Despicable Me: Minion Rush for free from Google Play. The initial download is only 15MB however there were two extra download portions, a 30MB download when the game is first loaded and a second just after the first cut-scene. Check it out, the cute factor is over-whelming and it’s a pretty fun game, even if you don’t invest in any of the in-app purchases.
