Atari – they’re behind some of the biggest games of your childhood. Starting with Pong and continuing on through massively successful titles like Centipede and H.E.R.O, they revolutionised the video game industry from upright and tabletop arcade machines through to the home video game console market. While the somewhat sedentary life of a gamer can be a health issue, Atari is taking that head on releasing a fitness app for Android (and iOS).
It’s a pretty good attempt at a fitness app though from first glance, with over 100 exercises included in a bunch of workouts – all developed through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) – some of which are free, some you’ll pay for through In-App Purchase (IAP).
As expected from a gaming company like Atari, they’re intending to gamify getting fit. You’ll unlock Atari games like Pong, Super Breakout, and Centipede, and you’ll track all your stats like distance, speed, pace and calories burned for bragging rights when you join in the multi-player element of the game which includes an online aspect to share your data on leaderboards and on social media.
You can download Atari Fit now from Google Play – it’s free (with IAP). If you’re keen to get fit and check out some retro gaming, this could be for you.
