LG Smart TV
LG’s range of SmartTVs, including their latest WebOS models as well as their earlier NetCast 4.0 and 4.5 models will be getting access to Google Play Movies & TVs, bringing access to thousands of movies and TV shows.

The deal will bring the Google Play Movies & TV app to 104 countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and of course Australia. According to LG, the access will begin this month, very likely with a software update delivered over the air to compatible TVs.

In-kyu Lee, senior vice president and head of the TV and monitor division at the LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company said

The smart TV market is growing rapidly and with that comes a tremendous demand for fresher, higher-quality content. Meeting this demand is LG’s highest priority, matched only by our desire to provide the best possible viewing experience on our TV products with the webOS platform. Our close partnership with Google will go a long way toward fulfilling the high expectations of LG Smart TV owners.

As with other platforms with access to Google Play Movies & TV, LG TVs will be able to pause playback on their TV, then take right up where they left off on their smartphone, tablet or PC.

With Android TV still in its infancy, there’s still a small adoption rate. With this new deal, Google gains a wide range of new customers with a simple software update. As far as we can see this is a great deal for LG customers.

Great article Daniel. For those who live outside US like me, you can access Netflix, Hulu and similar media stations on your LG Smart TV by using UnoTelly or similar tools.

How can we find out which TV models will get this? I haven’t got a clue what OS my LG TV is running.

Good to see Google allowing this. The more platforms the content is accessible from the more likely people like me who are afraid of lockin will buy content. not that I have a LG set.

I must say Samsung using Tizen or whatever the name is sucks. It is slow and boring and useless. Glad I have Nexus player etc and can ignore the Samsung system. LG would have been good but I figured go for the panel and price.
