Google’s Cardboard viewer got a shot in the arm today with a new app designed at creating new content for the viewer yourself. The new app, called Cardboard Camera is available for free from Google Play and lets you capture 3D pictures which you can view on your Cardboard headset.
The new app will capture a stereoscopic panorama image which gives a depth to images, and you can also add sound to the pictures for a bit more of a personal touch. The circular motion used to capture the photos adds the 3D quality to the photos by some sort of wizardry, but looks to be quite easy to use – though time and testing of this will tell.
The app is free to download from Google Play and Google lists features for the app:
• Take beautiful panoramic photos with depth and sound you can see and hear in VR.
• Download and start capturing immediately. No sign-up or account required.
• View photos in virtual reality using Google Cardboard.
Once you’ve installed the app from Google Play, the on-boarding experience gives you a quick run down on what to expect from the Cardboard Camera app:
The app will also take you through the process, telling you to put your phone in portrait mode to capture the image and giving you options to turn sound capture on or off. Once you hit the capture button you are then directed to start capturing your shot by moving the camera to the right – and you’ll get told if you’re doing it wrong too ;).
The app has a couple of trial pics for you to test out in your Cardboard headset just to get a feel for what to expect.
