The Google Play store has apparently implemented Promo Codes for apps and games. The new feature allows developers to implement the feature in their app to give away free content or access to a full version of the app or game with a code.
The new feature, announced in the Google Play Developer console is described in the Android Developers section describing the feature:
Promo codes are created via the Google Play Developer Console and are tied to Product ID or SKU, and is easy to implement with the In-app Billing version 3.
There are restrictions however, with in-app subscriptions not able to be redeemed with a promo code. Promo codes are limited to a maximum of 500 per quarter – which Google says can be used in a variety of different ways:
- 500 paid app promo codes, or
- 500 promo codes for one in-app product, or
- 250 paid app promo codes + 250 promo codes for one in-app product, or
- 100 promo codes for five in-app products
At this stage, the feature is only new, so it could be a while before we see codes starting to proliferate.
