My Tracks
Google’s very own fitness tracking app, My Tracks, will no longer be available after the 30th of April.

My Tracks is one of Google’s older apps in their archive, launching in February of 2009. The app tracks ‘path, speed, distance, and elevation while you walk, run, bike, or do anything else outdoors’. Google has often used My Tracks for showing off the capabilities of new Android features such as Android Wear integration before other more established brands began implementing them – but no more.

The announcement regarding the closure has been made on the support site for My Tracks, with Google advising:

After April 30, 2016, My Tracks will no longer be available. We apologize for the inconvenience this might cause My Tracks users. We’ve made the tough decision to invest our efforts into other, more wide-reaching, mapping projects

Though the service will no longer available after that date to track new activities, users will still be able to export data from the app. My Tracks data can be exported to Google Drive, or to an external storage device from within the app, with data able to be saved in a variety of formats:

  • KML: Contains locations, markers, photos, and sensor data
  • GPX: Contains locations and markers, but no sensor data like heart rate, cadence for biking, cadence for running, and power
  • CSV: Contains locations, markers, and sensor data
  • TCX :Contains locations, no markers, and some sensor data

Google has instructions on their support page on exporting the data you’ve saved.

As part of the announcement, Google has suggested a selection of other apps they believe could take the place of My Tracks for fitness enthusiasts, starting with their own Google Fit app, but have also suggested other competing services which do have Google Fit integration such as Strava, Endomondo, Map My Run, Map My Hike, GPS Logger for Android and GPX Viewer.

My Tracks lists only 10 – 50 million installs on Google Play, paling in comparison to other Google Apps, of which many have achieved or are approaching over 1 billion installs.

If you’re a user of My Tracks, it’s time to export your data and check out the other options available.

The app was not found in the store. 🙁

Spewing. All it needed was Fitbit integration. Now we have to put up with ads in other apps.
