Update: It’s now available to download from Google Play.
Nintendo Australia announced overnight that their first smartphone app, Miitomo will launch late tomorrow afternoon in Australia alongside their new My Nintendo rewards program.
Miitomo lets you use your Mii avatar (which can be imported from existing Nintendo services and devices should you already have them) to start interesting conversations with your friends, perhaps revealing some facts you didn’t know about each other.
Some of Nintendo’s sample questions are quite fun – “How would you define your fashion style?”, “What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten?” and “If you were given ten grand to spend in one day, what would you do?” (spoiler: they’re probably hoping you’ll buy some Nintendo products)
The app went live on Nintendo’s home turf in Japan earlier this month, where the company is reporting over 1 million downloads so far. A good start!
The app is free to download, but you should be aware that it does have in-app purchases and you’ll pay for some items using the app’s currency – like this cute pirate costume:
The launch of Miitomo also coincides with Nintendo’s new My Nintendo rewards program, a system that the company says will reward users for interacting with Nintendo products and services and offer enhanced experiences when linked with apps.
If you sign up for Miitomo now at miitomo.com before the March 31 launch, you’ll get Platinum Points (you get Gold Points for purchasing games from the Nintendo e-Shop on Wii U and 3DS). Points can be redeemed for digital content and discount coupons.
