hangouts
Google has been promoting their YouTube Live video offering of late, and the pinch is being felt by Google’s other video broadcasting service – Hangouts on Air. Google has quietly updated their support page for the service to note that from September 12th, YouTube Live will be used instead of Hangouts on Air.

It doesn’t appear that Hangouts on Air is actually being killed off, instead the scheduling service appears to be the first casualty. The update for the transition on the support page reads:

Hangouts On Air will move from Google+ to YouTube Live on 12 September. If you want to schedule new Hangouts On Air you will need to use YouTube Live. Events cannot be scheduled on Google+ after 12 September and you will need to move existing events scheduled to happen after 12 September to YouTube Live.

There’s also instructions on how users more familiar with Google Hangouts on Air can use YouTube Live to schedule events:

  1. Go to Live Streaming Events in Creator Studio.
  2. Click New live event.
  3. Select Quick (using Google Hangouts On Air).
  4. Give your live stream a title.
  5. Click Go live now or enter in details to schedule your event for later.
  6. Use Hangouts to broadcast live.

We do use Hangouts on Air for our Ausdroid podcast, so perhaps we’ll be using YouTube Live for our future events.
