If you’ve been waiting on the third installment of Brian Singers X-Men series then wait no longer with X-Men: Apocalypse now available to buy or rent on Google Play Movies.
You can buy X-Men Apocalypse Now as a Digital Download through Google Play for $17.99 in SD/$19.99 in HD or if you’re old school it will be available on 3D, Blu-ray & DVD on September 28.
The movie is the third in the series which re-writes the timeline prior to the original trilogy of movies which first launched Bryan Singer into the spotlight as the keystone of the X-Men movie franchise.
X-Men Apocalypse stars all the past and future stars jamming in cameos and feature appearances from new and old X-men characters. The old stars including James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult and Jennifer Lawrence are all back, starring alongside new characters played by upcoming actors such as Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Lana Condor as Jubilee, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler and the now fairly well known Sophie Turner as Jean Grey.
There’s more stars in this movie than you can poke a stick at, including in the ‘bad’ side of things with Oscar Isaac starring in the title role of Apocalypse, and bringing Olivia Munn as Psylocke, Alexandra Shipp as Storm and Ben Hardy as Angel.
The cavalcade of stars is almost too much for the movie, as it tends to spend a lot of the movie introducing the characters on both sides, or catching up with older characters. But once the introductions and re-introductions are made, it gets underway in a big way. The action is good throughout the movie, with a simply stunning sequence featuring Quicksilver which actually manages to out-do his scene from the Pentagon escape in Days of Future Past.
The movie sets up a lot of stars but it also allows the series to move forward if Fox so decides with new potential character arcs and story lines – including everyones favourite mutant, Wolverine, who gets a mostly unseen, but important to the storyline cameo.
Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse seems a little under-utilised and his motivations beyond being a bad guy aren’t really on par with my memories of the character from the comic series. But, as I am continually reminded, the cinematic universe is different from the comics and they tend to take liberties.
It’s not my favourite in the new series of X-Men movies, but it is definitely a good movie, entertaining you for the majority of the over 2 hour run time, so it’s definitely worth a watch. The downside to the digital movie purchases though is that you miss out on the special features included on the DVD, still if that’s important you can grab the DVD/BluRay later this month to get all those goodies.
If you’ve been waiting for X-Men Apocalypse you can grab it now from Google Play or your favourite digital video service of choice.
I love X-Men: Apocalypse… <3
