In April this year, Google began inviting higher level Local Guides to test out a new travel app called Trips. The app has today migrated to a full launch and is available now in Google Play.
The app is a more formalised version of the Trips bundles that Inbox by Gmail users have been using for a while now. Trips automatically bundles all the information such as reservations for flights, hotels, car rentals and restaurants you have for an upcoming trip based on emails in Gmail and puts them in one easily accessible place which is even available offline.
Your trips show up with options to add day plans, with suggestions for things to do when visiting the top 200 cities in the world. You’ll get suggestions for the most popular sights, attractions, places to eat and local gems. These day plans are customisable so you can change them based on how much time you have or what you’re interested in.
The app uses a lot of the Google Maps data that Local Guides have been adding over the last few years like opening times for places, as well as the most busy times for those places.
As well as what to do in these cities, Google Trips also has information on getting around – whether it be by public transport like ferries, buses, trains or using taxis/car ride services or just walking or riding a bike, there’s loads of local information included in Google Trips.
The app is available to download now from Google Play for Android, and the app store for iOS users. It’s not restricted to the US or anything so if you have a trip coming up, download it now and check it out.
Seems pretty nice, but it’s definitely missing features… like being able to manually add a destination or venue or something to my trip. I can submit a suggestion, but can’t just add it to my trip… not really much use for planning a trip without that feature…
