In an announcement today on their blog, Twitter has announced that their Periscope powered live video streaming feature now supports 360-degree video streams in Periscope and Twitter.

The announcement isn’t quite available for everyone at this stage with Twitter advising only ‘select partners can go live in 360 via Periscope’. The 360-degree feature was announced on the Twitter blog, with Periscope star Alex Pettitt launching the first tweet with an embedded 360-degree live stream this morning.

You’ll be able to recognise a 360-degree broadcast by the badge that accompanies a Twitter post with an embedded 360-degree video.

Exactly which devices are supported for 360-degree live video streaming hasn’t been announced, but Alex filmed this one on an Insta360 Nano for iPhone. A number of 360-degree cameras are now available on the market, but not all support live streaming so it will be interesting to find out which devices are compatible with this new feature.

Twitter recently ditched the requirement for Periscope to be installed as a separate app on your phone to live-stream video on the go. Live streaming can now be selected from a new Tweet by hitting ‘Live’. The new 360-degree live video streaming however appears to be a feature going live in both Twitter and Periscope.

Twitter and Periscope will be rolling the 360-degree feature out more broadly in the coming weeks and encourages people interested in signing up to submit their details.
