Vines impending shift from short video sharing social platform to, well, a novelty camera app is complete today with the Vine app updating to Vine Camera in Google Play.
The Vine Camera is a much cut-down version of the original Vine app, the camera functions the same: simply tap and hold on the preview image to record video as you pan around, but once you’ve recorded your 6-seconds of video is where it changes. Previously you could upload Vine videos to the Vine social network complete with caption, which you could then share a link to on any of your social platforms. From today, you can simply share the video to Twitter where it plays as a 6-second looping video.
The video is also saved to your camera roll and if you want you can pull the file (a WEBM file format) from your DCIM folder where it sits waiting for action in the VINE folder.
Twitter, and indeed the internet has come a long way when it comes to sharing video and Vine is a throwback to a different time where video was ‘hard’. It will interesting to see what the raft of ‘Vine Stars‘ who became famous for their 6-second videos will do now, although they’ll probably just get bigger Twitter followings.
If you’re into Vine, or were, you can still download your Vine archive from their website, which will eventually become an archive of all the content, but you may not be able to for much longer.
