I have to admit, I’m a fan of Today Calendar, I don’t know if it’s the material design, the intuitive options of UI or simply the cool icon that shows the date. When I saw a post from developer Jack Underwood this morning celebrating the 1 millionth download of Today, I was genuinely happy when I saw Jack was building the next evolution of his Calendar vision — I was beside myself with excitement.
Now, just to be clear this isn’t an update to the current Today app, nor could it be expressed as Today 2.0, this is a reimagining of a Calendar app informed by years of user feedback, community engagement, app analytics and I’m guessing a lot of lessons learned in how to (and how not to) make a great Android app. Speaking with the developer briefly today he emphasised that Calendar 2 (a working name perhaps?) would be focused more on the mainstream users of the app meaning that some of the fewer used “power user features” may not make it into the next iteration.
I joined a private beta testers group and while it’s very early days I already like what I’m seeing. The app has a clean design with an adaptive month/agenda view (my personal favourite from Today Calendar) which intelligently shows you more of what you’re interacting with. What I’m seeing certainly in line with what the developer stated as his goals of more focus on speed, efficiency and polish, and I think that’s something we all would want.
