The early days of January are some of the busiest days in the gym, with new attendees signing up hoping to change their lives. Google is also aware of this and is introducing their 30-day challenge in Google Fit to help you move more.
To join up, simply open the Google Fit app on your phone to be prompted to join the 30-day fitness challenge. Once you click the link you’ll be enrolled in the challenge which kicks off on January 1st.
The goal of the challenge is ‘to get as many points as possible’, with Fit automatically logging your activities, or you can add them manually yourself in the app.
The addition of Move Minutes to Google Fit came with the last major update to the platform, with a focus on hitting 150 Heart Points per week. The 150 points is set by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) with the increase in activity said to ‘reduce the risk of heart disease, improve sleep and increase overall mental well-being’.
Google has picked the #GetFitWithGoogle hashtag on Instagram and Twitter to try and encourage you to do more. To push start the challenge, they’ve engaged ’36 influencers from nine countries around the globe’ to use the hashtag and push you to your best.
Though they’re encouraging sharing activities, the disappointing factor is they’ve made no moves to socialise the Fit platform. I’d love to see an option to share my 150bpm heart rate with my wife or friends after an intense cardio workout or have them do the same. Nothing like a little friendly competition to get you up and off the couch.
Exercise is hard, and as a former couch potato (I weighed almost 145kg) who lost the weight (weighing in around 90kg now), I can tell you it’s hard work but worth it. If using Google Fit is what it takes to get you up and off the couch then go for it. Put on some music and go for a walk.
