Back in September, Vodafone announced the 2013 edition of App Aid had begun, with five charities teaming up with five developers to bring apps that would help charities to achieve great things in the community.
The apps are now being developed, and have now entered the ‘crowd-funding’ stage, where the public are given the opportunity to back any of or even all of the projects to help them ‘win’ the App Aid challenge. All of the projects will ‘Win’ in some respect with each dollar raised through Pozible being matched by the Vodafone Foundation up to a maximum of $10,000, with an additional $10,000 going to the team who garners the most individual backers.
The Five apps are now up on Pozible which you can see in the App Aid/Vodafone Foundation collection:
- Beyond Blue and developer Two Bulls
A “Check-in app” that guides people through how to ask, listen and help if they suspect a friend is going through a difficult time. - McGrath Foundation and developer Garoo Games
A cricket game app where a cash amount is attributed to every run scored. The aim is to reach $370,000 worth of runs – raising awareness of the fact it costs this much to fund a McGrath breast cancer nurse. Players will also be encouraged to donate via the app. - Murdoch Childrens Research Institute and developer Wave Digital
A “Stepathon app” keeps kids engaged with the initiative of the same name. It will also provide health information to kids and their families. - Starlight Children’s Foundation Australia and developer Leaf Cutter
The “Happy Space” app facilitates children’s wish fulfilment by matching them with potential donors. Kids submit their wish and the public can be inspired to help by directly donating an item or experience. - Taronga Foundation and developer Crazy Dog Apps
‘Wild Reporter‘ App’s aim is to build a community of like-minded people by allowing anyone living or travelling through South East Asia to directly and discreetly report the illegal trade of animals. You can take a photo of an animal in danger and use the GPS to mark the location, which will be investigated by local partners and authorities.

You have until 5pm Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time on the 5th of December to back your favourite project. Any of the apps that are actually brought to market by the 31st of March 2014 will be promoted by Vodafone to ‘assist in attracting attention for the apps and assist in driving awareness and downloads’.
All the projects are aiming to bring an Android and iOS version of their App to market so make sure you back your favourite or all of them, this is for charity :).
