Optus has today announced a new badge that will be attached to phones sold in their stores and online, which will tell customers living in regional areas which ones will give the best best voice and data reception.
The badge is similar to Telstra’s Blue Tick certification program which they attach to handsets in their range that have been tested for performance in regional areas.
Optus’ Regional Coverage badge will be displayed next to handsets in their range that have passed their extensive network tests. It’s a peace of mind thing, with Optus advising that handsets with the badge ‘may get a stronger signal or a more reliable connection in areas with limited mobile coverage (indoors or outdoors)’.
Optus lists a variety of factors which can affect phone reception, including ‘built-in internal antenna, material casing and even phone size (or form factor)’.
There’s a number of pre and post paid handsets already certified in the range, with Optus listing these options:

- Samsung Galaxy S5
- LG Stylus DAB+
- LG G5
- Samsung Galaxy S7
- Samsung Galaxy S7 edge
- Microsoft Lumia 650
Prepaid

- Oppo F1
- Samsung J1 mini
- Huawei Y3 11
Of course the badge only applies to phones sold through Optus. The badge hasn’t started showing up on the Optus website as yet, but should do both in-store and online to ensure you grab the best handset for your area.
The Samsung S6 is missing. As a S6 user, I’m not at all surprised. The reception (particularly 4g) is woeful
