See that kick butt benchmark score above? That thing is brought to you by Qualcomm’s MSM8660 Dual-core CPU that clocks each core at a beasty 1.5GHz. What phones will be powered by such an incredible processing machine, you ask. Well have you heard of a little device called the HTC Pyramid? Yep, it’ll be in that, just clocked at a slightly more feasible 1.2GHz per core. The benchmark shows that it kills the LG Optimus 3D which was previously the king of CPU power, but it has already been outdone even before its release. The MSM8660 even has an Adreno 220 graphics processor, which is better than the Xperia Play‘s Adreno 205 GPU. Given that I’m a lover of the Galaxy S II, I’d love to see a benchmark comparison between the Exynos 4210 and Snapdragon MSM8660 and go from there. All in all, we’re about to see the high-end smartphone wars really begin. April 12th anyone?

Update: We’ve found Quadrant benchmarks for the MSM8660, Optimus 3D and Galaxy S II:

  • Qualcomm MSM8660: 2851
  • LG Optimus 3D: 2985(!)
  • Samsung Galaxy S II: 1950

The LG Optimus 2X scored like 2438 for me in quadrant

This is an OpenGL benchmark, meaning it mainly tests the graphics capability of the chip. This doesn’t necessarily mean it will be faster in general performance. I’m more surprised to see that Tegra 2 + Geforce in LG 2X is only marginally faster than much older hummingbird + SGX 540 combo.

why the hell is the iphone 4 lower than the 3gs?

Higher density screen.

Right

inferior processor on iPhone 4, clocked at 800mhz… but great gpu on the iPhone. the higher pixel count also

AnandTech tested the prototype handset (in which the MSM8660 resides) with a 13MP rear cam and the Quadrant benchmark was 2851!
