Update: The Sonic is now available from Dick Smith online for $248

Today Huawei held a media event up in Sydney to showcase some of their existing and new products that they plan to launch here in Australia before the end of the year. Besides mentions and a showing off of the MediaPad, Huawei announced that the Huawei Sonic is launching here in Australia and will sell via retail stores Dick Smith and Woolworths. There is no current pricing on the Sonic, but from the following specs we guarantee it won’t cost an arm and a leg.

  • 3.5-inch Capacitive Display
  • Android 2.3
  • 3.2MP Camera
  • 600MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 CPU
  • 1400mAh Battery
  • Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi b/g/n

The Sonic is nothing to write home about, though I can see it being pretty popular among people who wish to have a smartphone without the killer pricetag.

Looks like a great phone. Only $188 Unlocked at my local Woolys. Great screen, battery life, camera and decent performance. Can play some pretty good games and seems to run smoothly.
Hopefully it is root able. Good design as well.

Note that you can buy second hand nexus one’s on eBay for this price ($250). You’re getting much better specs (3.7 vs 3.5; 380×800 res vs. 320×480; 1ghz CPU vs 600, 512MB RAM vs 256) you can also get Gingerbread on the Nexus One. (And likely the next version of Android)

Was interested until i found out it only has 256MB RAM…

Price looks bang on. Huawei is definitely on the march this year with a fair few more handsets to hit market.

So an upgraded Ideos.
I’m guessing nothing on the X6.
Looks like Huawei is only getting into the budget end of the Android market.

Looks like a worthy replacement for my Comet. The screen size is the only thing I don’t like about my current phone.

Esandjay

I hope it can run flash

Interesting that it appears to have been skinned, vanilla UI is often one of the most appealing features of huawei phones (though not so much their tablets)

Yeap, seems this new skinning is here to stay. The X1 that will be launched on Optus/Boost prepaid and will also be skinned in exactly the same way as the Sonic.

As for price surely it has to be priced around $250 if the X5 is $299.

A quick question on the X1, does anyone have any idea of when it will be released on Optus/Boost prepaid?

Cheers

Should be a great email, browser, music and phone/sms device.
it’ll definitely be my ‘in the draw backup device’ of choice if the price is right. means i can get rid of my rusty old nokia e72.

sounds pretty decent for a low end, hope it’s cheap. should do well.

manman

any idea if it will work with telstra next G?

Buzz Moody

Huawei devices don’t usually support 850MHz 3G. So until we have specs, I’m going to have to say no.

Any chance of a review of this unit?

I highly doubt it 🙁 It would be great to see these low end/cheap Android phones be NextG capable.

Yeah!  You might be right there GrKTcB. I just bought one today for my husband (the dinosoar), and DSE said that it would definitely work with Telstra. But while the 2g sim worked (except it would not link to his telstra email), when I put the 3g sim in, it was only a phone – no internet apps and nothing much else worked. I downloaded the 70 page instruction manual and it is silent on how to handle this. Telstra doesn’t want to know and Huawei are closed for the weekend.  I am very disappointed and will try to access DSE tomorrow and… Read more »
