Testing. Skype have today added 17 new devices to their Video Calling service on Android. Although a few of these devices — listed below — were able to have Skype Video Calling over a month ago thanks to a leaked / hacked APK, it’s good to see Skype further pushing Video Calling on the Android platform. Some of the devices added in today’s update aren’t applicable for markets outside the US of A so I’ve listed only those that will affect devices available in Australia or via imports. Hit the break to see if your device can Video Call.

  • Samsung Galaxy S II
  • Samsung Galaxy S
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab (7-inch)
  • HTC Desire (running Android 2.2)
  • HTC Sensation
  • HTC EVO 3D
  • HTC Incredible S
  • HTC Desire HD
  • HTC Flyer
  • Sony Ericsson Xperia Play
  • Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray
  • Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro
  • Acer A5

Currently there’s no group Video Calls so you can only go one-on-one, if that’s your kinda thing. It also doesn’t matter if it’s mobile-to-mobile or desktop-to-mobile, which is cool.

If you’re lucky enough to own one of the above devices, be sure to head to the source link (or Android Market on your device) and download it today.

I have the sony ericson x10 mini pro with latest skype app on there and I can do everything apart from video call, yet skype state it does work. I have tried everything, just dont have the option on the app!

Paolo Carreon

As explained in the Skype app you need Gingerbread for front cam to work. Froyo = back cam

Dawei Deng

can’t do anything with my milestone…

Flame

Hilarious that I go to the Market and it tells me that Sykpe “is incompatible with your SGS2”. bahaha

Jake

Yeah, that Sykpe app is a tricksy one. 😛

Isdon_isgood

Video call works great on my HTC Incredible S!

Ausmetal94

pretty sure the Desire HD has no front camera…

Philipdonkin

The front facing camera on my Galaxy S is not being used, only the back camera which seems pretty useless as I can’t see anything

Ultimatedonar

Same with the Galaxy Tab. Rear cam…what’s the point?

Hikari0307

It’s explained in the description of the app in the Market. Unless you have Gingerbread, skype can only use the back camera. Froyo doesn’t allow the app to access the front camera.

Sit in front of a mirror in your bathroom

You sure that’s not the Desire S?  The Desire doesn’t have a front-facing camera…

Hikari0307

the Desire S has already been supported before this. Pretty sure they mean the Desire though it’s gonna use the back camera~~ Skype is expecting you to put a mirror to look at the screen of your device~~
Seems devices not running Android 2.3 won’t be able to use the front camera as well even if they have any as they say Android 2.2 doesn’t allow access to the front camera.
