There’s a lot going for the Xperia Play from Sony Ericsson; it has 150+ optimised games (Minecraft PE & BF:BC2 reviews in the next few days) as well as a confirmed update to Ice Cream Sandwich once it becomes available. But before Ice Cream Sandwich hits the Xperia Play, it will first be update to Android 2.3.4 which will bring a handful of bug fixes and UI optimisations, though more importantly, 720p video recording with continuous autofocus. It’s a mystery why the device didn’t ship with 720p recording in the first place, although it was quite weird that it shipped with the vanilla camera application instead of the Sony Ericsson themed one, so who knows what was happening there.

Another update coming in Android 2.3.4 for the Xperia Play is the ability to switch on and off the auto-brightness setting, an option not available on the Xperia Arc or Xperia Neo. The Xperia Play is available from Crazy John’s, Virgin Mobile, Optus and Telstra, and none of these carrier has set a date of the roll-out of the Android 2.3.4 update, however, Sony Ericsson Australia stated that the roll-out would start in October — we’ll keep you updated though.
