I first noticed that a Pinterest app would be coming out around Google IO however attendees at Google IO spoke with Pinterest there who advised the app was not quite ready. Well it appears it’s now ready, Pinterest are linking to the Pinterest app in the Google Play store from their Mobile Apps page.
The app is designed for Android 2.2+ and weighs in at 4.6MB, Pinterest recently did away with the need for invites to join up to the service so you can now just sign up from within the app, or if you already have an account simply login. The app is very iOSish in feel and design. There is no menu button anywhere within the app, but the layout is fairly easy to navigate. To find friends you can link your Twitter or Facebook account and it will find friends who are signed in with those networks already on Pinterest.
I can’t say too much about the actual Pinterest network as I don’t know that much about it although I’m pretty sure my wife will be excited about this latest app release into the Google Play Store. It’s free to download and use so jump on into the Play Store and install it and let me know what you think.
What is it? Why would we be interested in it?
Pinterest is bascially a bookmarking social web service. Great for “pinboarding” things that you want to come back to, or try out. Things that make you laugh, or that you want to share with your friends.
I’ve been waiting for the Android app for MONTHS now.. so glad it’s finally released.
It’s getting a lot of press lately, but I’m still confused about what it does that distinguishes it from the myriad other similar services out there – eg, Evernote, Springpad, Pocket, etc.
I use Pocket too, I find Pinterest is also good for browsing through what other people have pinned, and it’s amazing just how many things I’ve come across that I wouldn’t have found otherwise. It’s great as an “Inspiration board” for me.
BRILLIANT! I’ll be downloading this ASAP and writing down my thoughts. I’m so glad they’ve finally released it!
I wouldn’t really say it has an iOSish feel, it feels quite holo if you ask me. if you press the menu button you get a list of options.. just like holo dictates i believe..
I use pinterest a little but, and i have to say this app is REALLY nice. great first release.
ps your google+ sign in thing doesn’t appear to be working.
