We’ve barely had the dust settle on the frenzy that was the Nexus sale that occured yesterday and Google is now pushing Android 4.2 source to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and they’ve also updated their Google Developers page with Factory images for various Nexus devices.
In the announcement on the Android Building Group, Jean-Baptiste Queru advised that the perfect platform for AOSP work going forward is the Nexus 10 with everything except the GPU code and proprietary binaries for various peripheral chips is Open Source. The Galaxy Nexus has a TAKJU image available to download however the YAKJU build has not been released as yet. The 4.2 image for the Nexus 7 Wi-Fi is available however the 3G version that went on-sale today in the US has not been released as yet due to some licensing issues in the GSM stack. The Nexus 4 is also not included in AOSP however an Android 4.2 factory image is available to download.
Sadly, it appears that the Nexus S and the Xoom will be left on Android 4.1.2 however this is not unexpected and JBQ has advised that he cannot comment on the future of the Nexus S or the Xoom. But with strong developer support on all Nexus devices look out for some AOSP ROMs hitting XDA/RootzWiki for these devices fairly soon.
Remember if you plan on flashing the TAKJU build to your Galaxy Nexus or the Android 4.2 factory image to your Nexus 7, it will wipe your device so ensure all your data is backed up before you proceed or just wait for the various OTA updates to hit.
Editor’s note: If you have a Nexus 7 WiFi running stock 4.1.2, the 4.2 OTA can be downloaded manually here, and applied easily using a custom recovery, or somewhat less easily using stock recovery. Chris did this last night with no issues at all. However, we take no responsibility if you manage to brick your Nexus 7 by updating this way.
My update came through tonight 7pm 14 Nov Sydney – which is good given I waited 2 weeks for the previous update!
Have they played around with the screen? It seems brighter, more saturated – or perhaps it’s just my eyes after a long day at work…
MX Player Pro is currently not supporting 4.2 🙁
Received 4.2 on my Nexus 7 at about 1pm today
OTA just arrived on my Nexus 7 just prior to 2pm today.
Got a bit thrown by the lock-screen after it booted, because its clearly half-configured for multi-user. Probably better if you set it up from scratch.
