The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission(ACCC) has launched a new app just in time for Christmas aimed at protecting consumers rights when shopping within Australia, released by Slattery Media Group, the ACCC Shopper app is now available in Google Play.
Speaking about the app, ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard said “Simple disputes over returns, refunds or replacements often leave shoppers confused about their rights. The ACCC Shopper app will help to take the worry out of Christmas shopping. Keeping your proof of purchase and checking the store’s returns policy if you have simply changed your mind can be important.”
On the subject of consumer protection with regards to faulty products she advised “Australian Consumer Law provides stronger protections against faulty products, often allowing for repairs, replacements or refunds outside of a manufacturer’s or retailer’s warranty period. If products don’t work as promised or don’t work at all you have rights as a consumer regardless of whether you bought it online, in a shop, full-price or on sale. The app explains the steps to take when enforcing these consumer rights.””
The app contains information about your rights regarding refunds, warranties and lay-bys, as well as containing information on terms like ‘Made in Australia’ and ‘Extra Virgin olive oil’. One of the best features of the app is the ‘My Items’ section which allows you to store information on your phone about your purchase including what Brand and Model you purchased, where it was purchased from as well as when and you can also photograph and store a copy of the receipt on your phone with that information. It also contains a reminder section to remind you of dates and times for lay-bys, gift card and also warranty expiry dates.
The app appears to be a direct port from iOS and whilst it has a pretty basic function it would be good to see a specifically designed app for Android, although it is good to see a simultaneous iOS/Android app launch. The App is available in Google Play now for free and requires Android 2.1 and upwards, it is a 2.5MB Download so check it out and let us know what you think in the comments.
