GS4-Active_008

After a good month or so of rumour and speculation, Samsung have today announced the Galaxy S4 Active. It’s essentially the Galaxy S4 we’re coming to know and love with a few modifications to make it ‘tougher’. The Galaxy S4 Active is waterproof for 30 minutes in a depth of a metre as well as being protected from dust.

The Galaxy S4 Active is slightly larger than the Galaxy S4 with an increase in height by 3.1mm, width by 1.3mm, thickness by 2.1mm, and weight by 21grams. The other major physical change is the replacement of the capacitive buttons with physical buttons.

The internal changes are few and far between. The 5-inch 1080p on the Galaxy S4 Active is TFT LCD instead of Super AMOLED, and the camera has been buffed down to 8MP. Everything else is largely the same:

  • 5-inch 1080p TFT LCD Display
  • 1.9GHz Quad-Core CPU
  • LTE, DC-HSPA+
  • Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean)
  • 8MP and 2MP cameras
  • 2GB RAM, 16GB Internal Storage (expandable)
  • 139.7 x 71.3 x 9.1 mm, 151g
  • 2600mAh Battery

There’s no information regarding availability here in Australia for now. It will, however, be available in the US and Sweden later this month and early July. It will come in three colours: Urban Grey, Dive Blue and Orange Flare.

I bet the screen would still shatter if it was dropped 30cm.
Sorry, but in my book, you still can’t call it rugged.

Well, the full HD LCD display would mean a true RGB stripe layout. If it’s the PLS-TFT type Samsung uses then it will be all good. Hopefully we can see it here sometime soon – curious on how it feels in hand.

No amoled. Would imagine it to be cost cutting??

Wow its the first tough waterproof phone that doesn’t suffer from watered down specs! It might actually be worth getting! Especially if the AOSP S4 Rom works on it!.

well done spamsung. you now have 5 versions of the same phone. And I actually like some samsung hardware (not including touchwiz) but man they release a confusing array of phones

5 versions? You mean 3. Exynos 5 octa, SD600, and this. The AOSP version won’t be dumbed down.

Not sure how you get 5 unless you include the rumoured Intel edition. The S4 mini is not the same phone, same family but not the same phone.
