The guys at Android Police found the other day that Google had included something a little extra in the newly released Gmail 4.6 for Android.
Google, well known for displaying ads on its web properties, had included the ability to display ads in the Gmail client on Android as well. It didn’t take long for this framework to start being used it seems. As you can see above, there’s ads now being shown in the Promotions folder for Gmail accounts.
These ads look like email messages, but the color is different and there is a badge marking it as an ad. Ads in the desktop Promotions folder look almost exactly the same.
Android Police’s APK Teardown also revealed a way to save or dismiss ads, but it’s not clear if that is being used yet. If it is, we haven’t seen it yet.
We’re reminded that these ads should only appear at the top of the Promotions folder in Gmail. If you don’t use that folder, the ads should never invade your eyes.
While this isn’t too obtrusive, it’s certainly not a welcome addition.
Well jeez! I never thought this would happen! I hope it stays in promotions only.
