After the massively successful run last week, whereby Twitch played Pokemon, Twitch is quite big news right now. They’ve just celebrated more than 10 million mobile installs of the Twitch app on Android and iOS devices and have just announced an SDK to allow mobile developers to include their games to the streaming platform.
For those unfamiliar with Twitch, it’s a community for gamers that allows them to stream games, chat about gaming or watch games in the process of being played. It’s a massive service that’s extremely popular and is included as a service on most consoles and SmartTVs.
The Twitch Mobile Software Development Kit (SDK) was announced on the companies Blog and will allow iOS and Android developers to add Twitch compatible functionality to their Apps. The full list of features offered to developers :
- The ability to capture and broadcast gameplay video and audio
- Video capture from the front-facing camera
- Audio capture using an internal or external microphone
- Videos can be archived for immediate viewing on Twitch and uploaded for sharing
- Broadcast quality can be toggled between High, Medium, and Low settings
- Robust chat options including emoticons badges and chat colors
- The easy discovery of related broadcasts from other gamers
The Twitch platform is a great addition to mobile gaming, which has seen a massive uptake in the past few years. With popular titles hitting Android and iOS, it was only a matter of time really before this was announced. It’s now on to see how long it takes before we’re all live streaming FlappyBird through Twitch.
