VLC Beta For Android

We’ve been big proponents of Chromecast since it was first announced, and we had them in Australia before they were on sale here. In short, it’s pretty clear that Ausdroid loves the Chromecast, and we know you guys do too — the versatile media streaming dongle has made getting your media, content and games on the TV a breeze, and it’s about to get a bit more useful still.

A recent changelog posted to Github shows that the VLC team is working on a Chromecast output module, suggesting that VLC will soon have the capacity to stream directly to your Chromecast. This means being able to cast any video, any multimedia content straight from your phone to your TV without mucking around. Why’s this important? The Chromecast hasn’t (traditionally) been particularly good for playing local videos, being designed for streaming network based content instead. There have been ways around this, but VLC will make this significantly easier for the masses.

We don’t know how the feature will work or what it’ll look like, but it promises to be powerful. We’d recommend installing VLC so that when the update drops, you’ll have it straight away.

Excellent – does this also apply to VLC desktop?
